Endymion
by Gary Allen [modern]

Selene, the Moon,
ravished by Endymion's beauty
as he steps one evening
into her light,
casts a spell upon him.
He falls in the grass
into a peaceful, immortal sleep,
preserved from competing loves
& trickery of fate.
Each night Selene goes to him,
removes his tunic,
adores his young black curls,
dotes on his lips, his silken
rippled chest,
making love to his unconscious perfection
until Apollo approaches.
Hidden from daylight commerce,
Selene's passion torments her,
gnaws in the shadow of her
every thought,
knowing that to waken his mortality
is to lose him,
she remains enslaved by his beauty
& awaits her private hour
when she journeys to him
across cold space.
